Koch-Chemie Soft Black Applicator Sponge | Fine-Pored Foam Pad (12x10x5cm)

There is a golden rule in valeting: never use an absorbent cloth to apply a dressing. Microfibre cloths are engineered specifically to trap dirt and absorb liquids. If you pour an expensive interior dressing or exterior plastic restorer onto a microfibre, the cloth will instantly drink half the bottle, wasting your money and leaving you with an uneven, patchy finish on the trim.

The Koch-Chemie Soft Black Sponge (Schwamm weich, schwarz) is the perfect, low-cost solution. Measuring a substantial 12 x 10 x 5 cm, this chunky applicator is manufactured from a highly refined, fine-pored foam. It is specifically designed to keep your liquid and gel dressings on the surface of the pad rather than soaking them deep into the core. This allows you to effortlessly glide a perfectly even, thin layer of product across interior dashboards, leather seats, exterior plastics, and tyre sidewalls.

The generous dimensions are a massive advantage. The 12 x 10 cm face allows you to cover large areas of dashboard or wide tyre sidewalls rapidly, while the deep 5 cm thickness ensures your fingers stay completely clean and safely away from greasy silicone dressings. Because the foam is incredibly soft and flexible, it easily contours to the tight curves of a steering column and the intricate slats of an air vent, while the dark black colour hides the ugly brown stains that inevitably transfer from exterior rubber.

Why this foam applicator is a valeting essential

  • Perfectly Sized (12x10x5cm): Large enough to cover wide panels quickly, with a deep 5cm profile that keeps your hands clean from chemicals.
  • Stops Product Waste: The ultra-fine foam structure prevents expensive dressings and leather conditioners from soaking into the centre of the pad.
  • Flawless, Even Coverage: Spreads a uniform layer of dressing without leaving greasy streaks or high spots in the plastic grain.
  • Highly Flexible: Soft enough to easily compress into tight panel gaps, air conditioning vents, and intricately textured leather seats.

How to Use the Koch-Chemie Soft Black Sponge

  1. Apply Product to the Sponge: Never spray interior dressings directly onto the dashboard, as the overspray will hit the glass. Spray or squeeze your dressing (like Top Star or Plast Care) directly onto the face of the sponge.
  2. Work into the Surface: Gently massage the sponge over the plastic, leather, or rubber. The flexible foam will push the product deep into any textured grain.
  3. Buff the Excess: Once you have achieved an even coat, take a clean, dry microfibre cloth and lightly wipe the surface to remove any excess residue, leaving a perfect matte finish.
  4. Clean and Store: Wash the sponge thoroughly with a mild dilution of Koch-Chemie Green Star or warm soapy water, squeeze out the excess, and leave it to air dry.

Pro Tip: Cross-contamination is a nightmare. If you use a sponge to apply a heavy, weather-resistant tyre dressing, you cannot use that same sponge on an interior leather steering wheel the next day. Buy a multi-pack, and use a pair of scissors to snip the corner off your "tyre and exterior" sponges so you instantly know which is which.
