I hope this finds you all well!

My apologies if this has been covered before plenty. I’ve spent the last few days doing endless research and feel more lost than when I started so hoping to get some opinions from you all that might help guide me better. Basically I’m trying to figure out which polish will be best to use for a beginner to machine polishing like myself. I’m planning on buying a relatively basic dual action polisher like a Kestrel DAS-6

I’ll practise on a few cheap cars first (my dads a dealer) and some panels from a scrap yard but ultimately once I’m happy with my technique it’ll be to polish out all the swirls and light surface scratches on a 5 year old BMW X5 that I just got hold of which as I understand has reasonably hard paint.

So the options I’ve found myself looking at are:

Autofinnese revatilse polishing kit
Scholl Concepts S20+ Black
Meguirs Ultra Cut (105) & Ultra finishing (205)
Gtechniq P1 Nano-Composite Polish

Does anyone have any advice / suggestions / personal experience you can share?

And I’m trying to figure pads out too, but I’m assuming I’ll just be best buying a variety and starting with the lightest ones and progressing to firmer pads until I get enough cutting action.

Thanks for any help in advance!

Welcome to the Forum.

You may struggle with the Kestrel's a little underpowered for the tough Beamer paint.

A far better machine is the CYC Das pro, which as more torque and can cope even with extremely hard paints.

Of the polishes you have listed, the Scholl S20 is good, but you will need a variety of pads and use it selectively on the car.

So here's what I would recommend.....

Scholl S17+ for the deeper imperfections.

Scholl S30+ for lighter imperfections, swirls etc etc.

Both will work fine on the yellow 3M pad.
