I'm going to use a da on my wife's car.

Is the key to use a heavy compound on panels with scratches and swirl marks and use light polishing compound on rest of the car. Or would you go other the entire car with heavy compound

The rule of thumb is to use the least aggressive combination of pads/polish until you find what works. So there is no point using a heavy cut compound if it's not needed. Say for example you had orange and white hexlogic pads and megs 105 and 205, you would start with the least aggressive combo e.g. white pad and 205.

If the scratches are too deep you will never remove them by machine polishing, swirls and wash damage should be fine though with a DA.

Look for the junkman videos on youtube, excellent guides for using a DA.
